I find that daily (or weekly or monthly) planners are unhelpful to schedule your life. You don't really have the perception of the tasks, how much is left to be done, delays...
For such reason I think it is much better to use project planners. They help you in having a clear idea of where you are and exactly see how your time is spent.
After a quick look over the internet I found Open Workbench which seems a valid alternative to Microsoft Project. It's open source and free for personal use (working in team would require other proprietary software).
And now it's time to have some rest.
